Dry Eye

In general a "DRY EYE" is a lubrication disorder of the surface of the eye that is caused by a decrease in the amount of tears and/or by a changed composition of the tear fluid.

The tear film consists of 3 layers and is just 18 micrometers thin. An even and adequate lubrication of the eyes is essential for a normal good vision. This lubricaiton is ensured by the so-called tear film, which is produced by various glands which are located in the eyelids, on the edges of the eyelids, in the eye socket and the conjunctiva.

As a result of a change in the tear film or a reduction in the amount, the eye is no longer ideally moistened, which causes symptoms in the form of burning, redness, itching and / or foreign body sensation.

The "DRY EYE" is also known as "Sicca syndrome" or "keratoconjunctivitis sicca" (sicca (lat.) = Dry). It is one of the most common diseases of the visual organ. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, i.e. the inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva that tends to dryness, is particularly common in middle age. Women are affected significantly more often than men - possibly as a result of the hormonal change in menopause.

Complaints can also be seen especially with contact lens wearers, as well as with people who spend a long time in front of the PC (reduced blinking).

If the dry eye is not or only insufficiently treated, it can lead to a persistent damage to the cornea, which in extreme cases can impair vision. Check-ups by an ophthalmologist are therefore very important and a visit to the ophthalmologist is mandatory if symptoms are present.

Usually for treatment artificial eye fluid is prescripted.
