ARTIFICIAL BLUE LIGHT AND CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

ARTIFICIAL BLUE LIGHT AND CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

I would like to share an article about the effects and reasons for the exposure of our eyes and body to blue light on digital screens.

We've become wary of blue light, but we need natural blue light for our well-being. Natural blue light comes from the sun and the blue sky. With the advancement of technology, artificial blue light emitted by LED screens such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions has become a part of our lives. So, how does artificial blue light, unlike the necessary natural blue light for our lives, harm us?

To shed light on this topic, it's essential to understand that our body has a biological rhythm. Unbeknownst to us, we wake up and go to bed every day with this biological rhythm. Just as the Earth has a 24-hour day cycle around its axis, our body's biological cycle continues as the repetition of biochemical, physiological, and behavioral rhythms throughout the day.

Biological rhythm equals circadian rhythm; around 6 in the morning, cortisol is released from the adrenal glands, increasing our blood pressure, and we wake up with energy. We feel more active around noon. The period from noon to the afternoon is when we are most active and coordinated.

Around 6 in the evening, our body temperature rises. After 6 in the evening, our blood pressure drops. From 9 to 11 in the evening, melatonin secretion increases. From 11 in the evening to 5 in the morning is the time when melatonin is most actively released, and we are in deep sleep. During this interval, body temperature decreases. With the release of cortisol in the early morning, the circadian rhythm begins, and we start a new day. In this biological rhythm, biochemical, physiological, and behavioral rhythms continue in our body.

When now we expose our eyes and body to blue artificial light in the evening our body assumes that it is still daytime and the circardian rhythm will be interrupted. This in fact, can have various negative effects on both physical and mental health.
